Rava Upma (Seasoned Semolina)

Upma is a typical South Indian breakfast dish made by seasoning rava (semolina). The hard part of the wheat is ground to make semolina. Good pasta is made from this because it contains the needed gluten.  In Malayalam, it is called rava, and in Hindi suji.  It is a good source of vitamin E, vitamin B, and minerals such as phosphorus, zinc, and magnesium.

Ingredients

1 cup rava
1 medium red onion, diced
1 jalapeno pepper, sliced round
1 tablespoon minced ginger 
1 sprig curry leaves, stem removed
2 cups water 
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoon oil
1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon urad dal


Cooking Directions


1. Heat oil in a pan
2. Add mustard seed, cover with a lid and allow it to pop
3. Add urad dal and fry it until it changes color
4. Add onion, jalapeno pepper, ginger, and curry leaves. Sauté this until soft.


5.  Add 2 cups of water and salt.  Let the water come to a boil.

6.  Add the rava and mix continuously until the rava observe all the water. The reva will make big lumps. Break down the big chunks with a wooden spoon as you stare everything together. 

Upma is ready to be served with some banana. Upma makes a delicious, and healthy instant breakfast.
